Fronted by Fiona McElroy, Big Mamma’s Door have been whipping audiences into a frenzy at festivals and live events audiences react to the big voice and rhythmic sound by getting on to their feet and dancing. This is a goodtime band that assures you leave with a smile on your face!
Fiona, has always sung and has been destined to be the singer she is, having tried other careers including acting the siren voice has called her back to the stage as a singer. That’s not surprising considering the dual talents Fiona has a big, lyrical voice and fantastic stage presence building instant rapport to ensure the audience feels part of the show.
Fiona regularly jammed at Ain’t Nothin’ But, in Soho mixing with the best blues musicians around as they played their hearts out at the regular Monday Jam session saw the partnerships develop that opened the doors and created Big Mamma’s Door. The smoky voice of Fiona was joined by an ensemble of fine musicians comprising of Mal Barclay (guitar) Rob Pokorny (Drums) Henri Herbert (Keyboard) and John Culleton, (Bass).
So just what is Big Mamma’s Door’s business?…Real Blues, Real Soul, and just a little bit dirty!
What makes the band stand out from the crowd
The combined mix of skill, natural talent and enthusiasm with the love of performing music live is the heart and soul of Big Mamma’s Door.
Bringing their own distinctive sound blending rock & Roll and the Blues so that the sound is not trapped in the 1950’s but is relevant for 21st century audiences that are demanding a good time.
Big Mammas Door are unique they combine smoky vocals that have been described as Etta James with a pinch of Patsy Kline, the spirit of Elvis rolled and tumbled with Fiona’s own style to create the front woman many a band could only dream of! BMD are not happy with one songster Mal when not providing controlled and skilled guitar work this is a band that is not about interludes of look how fast I can play, has an excellent voice that blends with Fiona to create perfect harmonies. Henri on keyboard provides skilful trips across the ivories that provide a rhythm and the fact that this is a band with two chord playing instruments they never step on each other’s toes to cause disharmony they support and empower each other. The solid rhythm section provided by Rob on drums and John on bass keep the beat and shapes the band so they deliver on time every time; this is skill that should never be underestimated and is what distinguishes the band and ensures Big Mamma’s Door will never be mediocre but will always be great leaving the audiences happy, wanting more and looking forward to the next time.
